The Georgetown Water Department is pleased to announce that it completed its 2022 spring flushing program on Wednesday, April 27.

The water system undergoes flushing twice a year to help ensure sustained water quality and clarity and support the longevity of the system’s infrastructure.

Georgetown Water Department Announces Fall Flushing Schedule

Dear Residents,

With the onset of colder weather, the Georgetown Water Department would like to remind residents to winterize their homes to prevent freezing pipes and inform residents that the Fall Flushing Program is planned to begin on October 4th with proposed areas of work as follows:

  • For the week of October 4th — Baldpate Road, Andover St, West St, Central Street/Nelson Street/Littles Hill/Lake Shore Drive areas.
  • For the week of October 12th — (no flushing Columbus Day) West Main Street/East Main Street/Elm Street/Tenney Street/Searle Street areas.
  • For the week of October 18th — North Street/Pond Street areas.
  • For the week of October 25th — Jewett Street/Thurlow Street areas.
  • For the week of November 1st — Jackman Street/Warren Street areas.

Residents of these areas may experience low or no water pressure while flushing is ongoing. The water pressure should be restored when flushing is finished in that area. Any discoloration or change in water clarity should be gone by end of day. Those wanting to expedite the process may do so by running water from a high-volume faucet — such as a bathtub — until water runs clear.

Residents are encouraged to avoid doing laundry while flushing is occurring in their neighborhood in order to prevent damage to clothing.

The water system undergoes flushing twice a year to help ensure sustained water quality and clarity and support the longevity of the system’s infrastructure.

Flushing will take place Monday-Friday from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

With sincere appreciation,

The Water Department is pleased to announce that it completed its 2021 spring flushing program on Thursday.

The water system undergoes flushing twice a year to help ensure sustained water quality and clarity and support the longevity of the system’s infrastructure.

“Thank you to the residents of Georgetown for your patience,” Utility Director Marlene Ladderbush. “We understand that discolored or cloudy water can be an inconvenience, but flushing the system is essential to maintain the highest quality drinking water into the future.”

Georgetown Water Department Announces Spring Flushing Schedule

GEORGETOWN —Utility Director Marlene Ladderbush announces that the Georgetown Water Department will begin its spring flushing program next week.

Water main flushing will begin during the week of April 6 and continue for approximately four weeks. Work will be ongoing during the morning and early afternoon hours.

The water system undergoes flushing twice a year to help ensure sustained water quality and clarity and support the longevity of the system’s infrastructure.

Flushing will take place Monday-Friday from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. according to the following schedule:

  • During the week of April 6: flushing will be done in the Central Street, Nelson Street, Little Hill, Baldpate Road, Andover Street, West Street, and Lake Shore Drive areas.
  • During the week of April 12: flushing will be done in the West Main Street, East Main Street, Elm Street, Tenney street and Searle Street areas.
  • During the week of April 19: flushing will be done in the North Street and Pond Street areas.
  • During the week of April 26: flushing will be done in the Jewett Street and Thurlow Street areas.
  • During the week of May 3: flushing will be done in the Jackman Street and Warren Street areas.

Residents of these areas may experience low or no water pressure while flushing is ongoing. The water pressure should be restored when flushing is finished in that area, though residents may also notice that the water may have notice discoloration or a change in water clarity. This is due to the removal of sediment from the underground pipes during the flushing.

The discoloration should be gone after a short time, but residents can expedite the process by running water from a high-volume faucet — such as a bathtub — until water runs clear. Residents are encouraged to avoid doing laundry while flushing is occurring in their neighborhood in order to prevent damage to clothing.

Spring Flushing Details

The Georgetown Water Department (GWD) is conducting its semi-annual flushing program, which is performed every spring and fall. A consistent flushing program is part of our water system maintenance and is intended to help improve water quality and extend infrastructure lifecycle.

Water main flushing will begin on Monday, April 13th, and will continue each weekday through mid- May between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Flushing involves Water Department personnel operating fire hydrants to scour the inside wall of the pipes, thereby removing sediment and mineral buildup that occurs at low water velocities.

The first areas to be flushed will be on the western side of town near the water treatment plant. Major streets include Baldpate Road, Andover Street and West Street.

Each week, flushing will continue using the following sequence:

  • the week of April 13th – Central Street/Nelson Street/Little Hill/Lake Shore Drive areas
  • the week of April 20th – West Main St/East Main St/Elm St/Tenney St/Searle St areas
  • the week of April 27th – North Street/Pond Street areas.
  • the week of May 4th – Jewett Street/Thurlow Street areas.
  • the week of May 11th – Jackman Street/Warren Street areas.

During water main flushing, you may temporarily experience a reduction in your water pressure. Once the flushing operation is concluded for the day, the pressure will return to normal levels. During and following flushing operations, you may experience dirty water in your home water system for a day or two. These impacts may affect streets a considerable distance away from the flushing hydrants. In the event that you have dirty water run the cold water at each faucet for several minutes before each use. By the end of the day, the water quality should return to pre-flushing operation conditions.

Domestic water service and fire protection will still be maintained during the flushing program.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We apologize for any inconvenience this required maintenance operation may cause.
